Researching your job opportunities. Don't just rely on job listings from career sites!

by CareerMVP.com

While searching for a job on the web is certainly a lot easier and more sensible than doing it offline, there are still certain limitations to career sites. There is not one web site that can list every opening in each city or industry. Even the largest job sites in the world may only list 10% of the available jobs in the economy. So, the job listings section of a web site should simply be one resource to give you leads and ideas.

As an applicant who wants to find the best opportunity possible, you're going to have to take an active role and put in some long hours. You owe it to yourself to make that investment.

So to help you, we've put together some tips derived from our more than 25 years of recruiting. We've actually listed some of the techniques we would use if we were representing you as an applicant to employers. We hope it helps.

Step 1: Determine where you want to live and what you want to do for a living. While companies like employees who are flexible, they prefer employees who know what they want. To do this research, you will find some helpful tools in our 'Tool Kit'. 'Relocate/Travel' has links to Tourism Bureaus and Chambers of Commerce which both offer excellent local information. To get more specific information for your industry, click onto 'Industry Research' where you will find our industry guides.

Step 2: Research the companies in your industry and geographical area. Our industry guides all have directories of companies and associations for the respective industry. Associations usually have a list of member companies which all could be potential employers. Our city and state career sites also provide a list of companies and job openings in the respective area. For more information in your area, visit the state or local Chamber of Commmerce site. They almost always have a list of the top local employers.

Step 3: Visit your favorite career sites and search for jobs matching your qualifications with your target companies. More importantly, visit the web sites of these employers to look for all current listings with that employer. It's also important to do some research on each employer's site. Visit sections of the employer's site such as 'about us', 'news', 'press releases', 'media' or 'investor relations' for more information on the company. Sections like 'In the News' will show articles written by third party publications about the company. They usually mention competitors which could be good prospects for potential employers.

Step 4: Search for competitors of the companies on your list. They always hire the same type of people. One of the best ways to find competitors is to search for articles on your targeted companies. Articles almost always mention the top three competitors.

Step 5: Apply for the current openings with the companies on your list.

Step 6: Just because a company does not list an opening, doesn't mean it is not available. Most companies do not update their sites very often. Sometimes, they do not want to list an opening because they don't want the current person to know he/she is being replaced. So, the rule of thumb is to find companies that hire people like you and send your resume to them! If you are a banker, contact all the banks. If you are an engineer, contact every engineering firm. If you're a graphic designer, contact all advertising agencies and printing firms.
